Why consider a career in cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is a career field on the upswing—and that’s putting it mildly. Employer demand for cyber professionals is consistently high as portrayed by CyberSeek, and the outlook over the next decade is extremely promising according to projections by the US Bureau of Labor of Statistics.

Entering the field of cybersecurity may seem daunting, but rest assured, there are many pathways and on-ramps to getting started. There are a wide range of positions within cybersecurity spanning every industry sector, which allow candidates to match their skills and experience to the position that best suits them.

People who work in cybersecurity tend to have good instincts and attention to detail. Communication skills and problem solving are vital as well. Obviously, technology plays a key part in cybersecurity, but that is only one facet of many job roles. For background on working in the field of cybersecurity, please visit the ‘careers in cybersecurity’ page of the Future of Tech website.

CompTIA is the world’s leading vendor-neutral IT certifying body with nearly 2.7 million certifications earned through rigorous, performance-based exams. CompTIA sets the standard for preparing entry-level candidates through expert level professionals to succeed at all stages of their career in technology. Through CompTIA’s philanthropic arm, CompTIA develops innovative on-ramps and career pathways to expand opportunities to populations that traditionally have been under-represented in the information technology workforce.

10 Best Paying Entry-Level Tech Jobs With No Experience in 2023 (careerkarma.com)

The term “entry-level” can mean lots of different things, depending on what kind of workplace you want to enter. An entry-level tech job is a position you can start with little to no experience at all. These are the jobs you are likely to get right after graduating from college with an IT bachelor’s degree or earning a coding bootcamp certificate. Many entry-level tech jobs can help anyone with the right technical skills gain the experience needed to move forward with a tech career. Some of the best paying jobs in technology are actually considered entry level jobs in tech. For example, you can work as a software engineer as soon as you graduate college, even if you have no experience. While it may feel like a challenge to find high-paying entry-level tech jobs, it is important to remember that everyone starts at the entry level.

How To Get Started in Tech

In the technical field, a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or engineering is generally preferred, but not always required, especially with the rise of bootcamps and certifications. Familiarity with programming languages like Python, SQL, JavaScript and HTML/CSS is beneficial, as many entry-level tech roles involve some coding or technical tasks.

Even for non-coding roles, like customer success manager, some understanding of technology is beneficial. Communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration are valuable assets across all tech positions. Showcase your skills through personal projects, open-source contributions or relevant online courses. Connect with people on LinkedIn, attend industry meetups and seek mentorship opportunities.

Data Analyst: What’s That Job All About?

A data analyst is a tech professional who analyzes and interprets data to extract valuable insights for businesses. They collect data from various sources and organize it to ensure accuracy and consistency, and identify trends, patterns and relationships. They work closely with business teams to understand their needs and provide data-driven recommendations to decision makers.

Some data analysts may specialize in a particular area, such as marketing analytics, financial analytics or customer analytics. With the fast ascension of artificial intelligence, machine learning and large language models, there will be a lot of career growth potential. When interviewing, companies will look for a proficiency in data wrangling (cleaning and organizing data), SQL (querying databases) and data visualization tools, like Tableau and Power BI. While not always mandatory at entry-level, familiarity with Python or R is a huge asset for data manipulation and analysis.

Average Salary: According to Indeed, entry-level data analysts earn an average base salary of $87,610 per year.
